It's like using "Scissors" (punctuation) to cut the clauses apart and "Glue" (connector words) to put them back together with meaning!

Step 1:  Identify clauses

  1. Independant Clause (IC)
  2. Dependant Clause (DC)

Step 2:  Establish Relationship between the clauses

What relationship exists between the information in your clauses?

  • You must know this in order to choose the correct Scissor and/or Glue!

contrast/comparision

addition

sequence

consequence (answers "why"/gives the reason/as a result)

for example

explanation

supposition

conditional

generalizing

emphasis

exception

similarity

Step 3:  Select the correct Scissor or Glue
